The agricultural sector consumes the largest amounts of water by far – approx. 70% worldwide. Irrigation systems are used to pump water to the ground and to dry areas especially during periods of inadequate precipitation. Water is often taken from surface sources or deep wells. Pump sumps are often located in the river or the lake where the water is collected.
